MAYENNIE is a fairy tale fantasy about a young fairy who faces oppression from the humans of her village while she struggles to fulfil her destiny - to bring her fairy colony back home to the forest of the fairies.
A long time ago, in the 1400s, in a village settlement in the African jungle, FAIRIES and HUMANS were once great friends and at peace. Things change when the human’s CHIEF dies, leaving his son to rule. The son is a diamond merchant. His transatlantic trade is booming so he encroaches further into the fairy’s forest. The fairies wage war on him to stop him ruining their forest. The chief retaliates by summoning the village witch to conjure a spell to banish the fairy colony.
But before he does, the fairies, on the advice of the FAIRY GOD OF INFANTS, place the Fairy QUEEN’S triplet baby girls inside calabashes and hide them in the forest to escape banishment. It’s their only hope of getting their colony back. There’s a storm in the forest, and the three calabashes go astray. The next morning, five defective animals find the calabash of the fairy baby, Mayennie and become her guardians. They do their best to keep the fairy child hidden from humans.
Many years later, the young fairy now grown, wanders into the open and is seen by the humans. From then, she struggles to be at peace with them. In failing to do so, she decides to escape from the village at which point she comes upon the ancient village curse and becomes a half FAIRY-GOBLIN. Frustrated and angry, she runs to the friendly witch for help, but that worsens her situation by making her bald.
Mayennie calls on her FAIRY-GOD who tells her she must seek favour from the special one, a human girl with pink hair, the only one who can save her. All attempts to find the girl fails. She loses hope and goes into isolation. She resurfaces years later, on hearing sightings of the special girl in the village. But she is hesitant, concerned about her looks. Her sudden struggle with vanity opens a portal to the goblin’s powers, and she becomes possessed by it. She gains the ability to steal the village women’s hair which transforms her into a beautiful young human with multi-coloured hair.
She goes in search of the girl and finds her but the fairy's desire for beauty presides, and instead, she steals the girl’s hair. Word reaches the new chief who reprimands her and makes her return the hair after which she becomes a full goblin. In shame, she retreats into the forest.
She eventually has a second meeting with the girl which revokes the goblin curse. Mayennie becomes a young fairy again. But she dies. The girl comes to her aid once again. Using a strand of her pink locks, plucked from the centre of her head, the girl releases the curse for good. The fairy returns to life and is finally free. With the curse lifted, the portal to the banished, fairies open. They return to the forest and live peacefully. This time they choose to be invisible to the naked eye to evade the human’s wrath.
